Where is the density?

The Urban Land Institute determined that 14,720 people per square mile is required to justify a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.  Half of that amount, 7,360, is needed to justify a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

Minnesota has 66.6 people per square mile according to the 2010 census. The Twin Cities area has approximately 3,600 people per square mile.

There are not enough Minnesota citizens to justify either system.

Where is the demand?

    How many people paid by tax payers were behind this poorly thought out idea? This is the lack of critical thinking no one should be forced to suffer but the thinking people with high paying governing positions show limits in their mentality and an inability to think things through and leave the people to suffer their governing consequences that common sense and logic would’ve avoided at the start. Would like the proper people to face and pay their own consequences. No more tax increases but cut taxes because the Minnesota government hasn’t got the intelligence for their oath of office and denies better ideas while their ill minded ideas imposed are significant costs and crisis. If Minnesota had the interest for this type of transportation the private sector is much more inclined to make it work or have the mind to drop it at no cost to society. We don’t like this governing force making it so we have no choice.

    Interesting analysis. But, it seems a bit off when tested against where LRT tracks have actually been placed in Minnesota.

    Your stats do show that putting a train in any random location in Minnesota – or even any random location in the Twin Cities – may not be a good investment. But, as you probably know (or could easily find out) the densities of our largest downtowns and the U of MN is far higher. As high as 19,652 in Ramsey County in 2010, with a growing population along LRT corridors.

      …so how come there isn’t an increase in usage holding steady and profitable? If the interest was there light rail would pay for itself as monies for personal choice should never come out of private sector tax payers pockets who take and are held to the full responsibility of their private investments unlike government who manipulates everything crowding out truth, underestimating or falsely predicting costs forcing obligation on the private sector to back the costs and all losses of government and their dense mentality that leads to consequences.

      Not only that but things that pay for themselves should never increase taxes as those monies are wiser borrowed and paid back by the users. Like the NFL and their billion dollar profits wants all things benefitting the NFL but “at no cost to the NFL.” The mantra should be “at no cost to tax payers.” Responsibility is learned where these government people aren’t budging to hold or teach or even mention. What are democrats doing to say to the country “yes we can?” They’re pushing out people conducting government lawlessly. Yes they can, are and continue. “Yes we can” has nothing to do with people and everything to do with “government oppression.”
