Density and Demand
Where is the density?
The Urban Land Institute determined that 14,720 people per square mile is required to justify a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. Half of that amount, 7,360, is needed to justify a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
Minnesota has 66.6 people per square mile according to the 2010 census. The Twin Cities area has approximately 3,600 people per square mile.
There are not enough Minnesota citizens to justify either system.
Where is the demand?
See the graphic for percentages of workers 16 and older in the Twin Cities, broken down by how they commuted to and from work.
