Today the Minnesota State Legislature voted to override Governor Pawlenty's veto of the $6.6 billion transit bill, thus passing into law one of the largest tax increases in our state's historyLegislators voted in favor of this massive tax increase in spite of recent polls showing the majority of Minnesotans opposed this bill.  Legislators voted in favor of this bill in spite of receiving thousands of phone calls and emails from their constituents urging them to support the Governor's veto.

As a result of this vote, Minnesota will now have one of the highest gas taxes in the nation.  A new sales tax will be imposed upon a majority of Minnesotans without a referendum allowing the people to have a voice in this decision. And those who purchase a new vehicle will pay a significantly higher personal property tax each year over the life of the vehicle. In the end, all Minnesotans will pay more - an average of $300 to $400 annually per household. And these new taxes are regressive, hitting those who can least afford it the hardest.

Some legislators tried to exploit the tragic I-35W bridge collapse to justify this bill, even though NSTB reports indicate the bridge collapse was likely due to a design flaw, not a lack of maintenance.  Some legislators tried to sell this as jobs bill, claiming that over 33,000 high-paying jobs would be created when, in fact, further investigation revealed that fewer than 2,000 construction jobs would actually result. Many legislators who voted for this bill told constituents that MnDOT said it needed an additional $2 to 3 billion dollars a year to fund its needs.  What these legislators did not share with their constituents, however, is that these figures represented a "wish list" of every conceivable transportation project MnDOT thought it might ever do.  Many of the projects on this list would never be completed because they were infeasible.  An example of one such project is the addition of lanes on I-94 between Minneapolis and St. Paul which could never happen because it was too expensive to “take” all the private property – residences and businesses – that would be necessary to expand the highway).

The bill passed today allocates 100% of the metro sales tax increase to the mass transit boondoggle (a total of $1.1 billion over ten years) versus fixing our roads and bridges. The bill pass today still relies upon pork-barrel allocation formulas for channeling gas tax revenues to areas other than those which need it the most.

There were other options available to finance Minnesota's transportation needs. But the state legislature decided to raise your taxes instead of cutting spending or making use of bonding.  What may be most disappointing about this vote is that it suggests that a majority of our state legislators do not have the people's best interests in mind. It suggests that they care more about special interest groups that stand to benefit from this bill than their constituents who will be forced to pay for it. Perhaps it's time for the people to get serious about taking back their government. Perhaps it's time for a change in whose representing your interests at our state capitol.

The Republicans who sided with the Democrats need to listen to the people they represent, when the people who elected them are telling them no new taxes. This is an outrage.

Let's see...you failed, the so-called Republican Party failed, the Governor, despite his veto, brought this on and did little, if anything, to head it off (he was too busy appearing on CNN and buzzing around Washington). The party's over.

Does anyone know the true breakdown of where the money is really supposed to go...roads/bridges versus Mass Transit? Is it specified? Watching the "news" lastnight all they mentioned was roads and bridges and I know that's not true. The article above says "...millions of dollars to funding boondoggle mass transit", but devil's advocate here, millions of $6.6 billion can be just a percentage. I would like to know the real numbers so I have some more ammo against some of my liberal "friends".

Shame on you who voted for this fiasco! If anyone of you had a job in the real world, you would think twice about what you did to us. Lets see, heating fuel at all time high, gas tax highest in the Nation, more schools, jails, etc, I would say you have bankrupted all of us tax paying citizens! After the election, all of you should know your new line in your new job, WOULD YOU LIKE FRIES WITH THAT?

It is frustrating that our representatives in the legislature have failed to listen to the will of the people. It is increasingly frustrating when the people work hard to elect representation that they believe will carry their views forward and then that representation ignores the message from the people. Republican Conservatives at the grassroots level have work to do: We must hold the (6) representatives in the House and the (2) Senators accountable for their votes on these tax increases. We must now go out and seek alternative candidates that understand the message from the people: Less taxes & less government spending by employing responsible management of the people's money. The people are expected to run their businesses and lives responsibly - we expect no less from our government. We have plenty of existing revenues to fix our roads & bridges. We can free up millions of dollars now being wasted. Let's get on with responsible government by electing responsible leaders.

The legislator that tried to use the I-35W bridge collapse as justification was Rep. Shelley Madore, who claimed that someone in her district died as a result of the collapse and that is why this bill was needed.

Unfortunately, NOBODY from Madore's district died in the collapse. Madore represents (in title only) Apple Valley. Nobody from Apple Valley died in the bridge collapse.

Even that aside, it's rather despicable that she has to use someone else's gravestone as a bully pulpit.

I have to admit I have never written a blog before. Sure, I have read plenty of them with enjoyment. But, I have to find a productive way to express my frustration over the override of Pawlentry's veto. I could have expected this of Democrates but, when the 8 Republicans abandoned the basic core principals of the Republican party - well.....Minnesota Nice be damned. It is time to identify and remember the names of the people who so easily rolled over for this tax increase. I will be posting their names in my mind and on a sheet of paper that I take with me to Party conventions and activities and make a point to not allow them to advance their political standing in the party. Time to move you.....you eight defectors.... and let the Freedom Fighting Republicans take the party back. Again...the heck with Minnesota nice....we as Republicans that were betrayed need to fight for our party's principals because apparently the eight currently elected defectors don't know how or worse yet don't believe in the same principals as the people who elected them.

Does anyone claiming to be democrat know what democracy means? Every democrat that has hidden agendas, as they all do, has no idea what democracy means. True republicans (not rino or republicon) stand to listen to the people, empathize with the people and encourage citizens to personal, rightful responsibilities, which in turn brings on independence and YES freedom! Which in turn builds human integrity, dignity, respect. everything positive. Including strength. Mind and soul. Every democrat should be removed as they misrepresent the meaning. It isn't fair to any of us, American born or not. Somebody, please tell me what message they are sending the immigrants? Every rino or republicon should be removed as they misrepresent the term of republican. Thanks demobrats , why don't you be real productive and give us back your unearned income we have some roads to fix and as is mentioned, get a real job. I'm sure this is asking too much but why don't you avoid the mistakes that will arise while you infiltrate every government but democracy? While we have brothers and sisters finding with their lives for our freedoms that is being taken away daily by the greed, authority, bias government!

Dave, the breakdown via the Senate Majority Caucus:
http://centrisity.blogspot.com/2008/02/its-about-funding-hf2800.html

· Trunk Highways: $3.4 billion
· County State-Aid Highways: $1.5 billion
· Municipal City-Aid Streets: $392 million
· Greater Minnesota Transit: $58 million
· Metropolitan Area Transit: $1.1 billion

I have still yet to find the MNGOP spending proposal, and whenever I ask someone they spin it back to funding. Well, the GOP funding proposal was for 7.5 Billion, almost a billion more. And everything I can find shows that the spending provisions of this legislation were not in much dispute.

Would love someone to provide me a link to the GOP counter proposal regarding funding. (flash at centrisity.com)

I would like the names of the Republicans who crossed over and voted for this. I am outraged, and I think they need to hear from us. Anyone have the list readily available?

LuAnn,

Look at the blog posting further down the page. It lists the Republica legislators with their phone numbers.

They asked for change, we got it!–With the passing of the largest tax bill in Minnesota history by Democrats and the "gang-of-eight" Liberal Republicrats. Not unlike Senator Jim Jeffords of Vermont, once Democrat, elected Republican, who turned Independent party–Just to keep the GOP from controlling the senate. Their actions are a classic example of why voters have lost trust in our political system and reluctance to vote for anyone.

It's more than the money, their actions represents a blatant betrayal of what our country stands for, the Republican Party, and most of all, the voters. Voters who put their trust in them, and elected them to uphold conservative principals the Republican Party stands for. They betrayed us–If the Republican party doesn't hold them accountable, I hope the voters in their district will.

I know that Jim Abeler voted with the democrats to override the veto. Since Mr. Abeler ownes property in the area of where the hub will be built I think someone needs to look into how he is going to profit when the light rail hub is built in Anoka. Some of us in this city believe he should not have voted because there seems to be a conflict of interest.

What I would like to know is what happened to "for the people, by the people"? I personally think that when trying to pass a bill that will affect the people so largely, the "people" should have the right to vote personally on it. Could this not have waited until November when we could all go to the polls and have a say where our hard earned money is spent?
