This afternoon Governor Tim Pawlenty held a press conference detailing his vision for immigration reform and enforcement in Minnesota.  Appearing with Department of Public Safety Commissioner and Minnesota Homeland Security Chief Michael Campion, Pawlenty issued four Executive Orders for immediate implementation and five legislative proposals to be acted upon as soon as the legislature is called to order in February.

This is arguably the boldest exertion of executive power by Governor Pawlenty in recent memory.  His vision for immigration reform was met with fierce opposition from liberal reporters and an incensed hispanic legislator, Patricia Torres-Ray (DFL, Minneapolis), who held her own impromptu press conference in the hallway after the Governor's presentation.

Pawlenty issued the following four executive orders with his signature today:

1. Minnesota law enforcement officers will work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to help enforce immigration laws.

2. New state emplyees and contractors doing business with the state will be required to verify citizenship through an Internet-based system operated by the federal governmnet.

3. Department of Public Safety will conduct a review of Minnesota driver license database to catch duplicate photos and examine for possible fraud.

4. Department of Public Safety will coordinate law enforcement summits to coordinate training in targeting criminal activity related to illegal immigration.

The five legislative proposals include prohibition of city "sanctuary" ordinances, strengthened human trafficking laws, enhanced penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, increased penalties for identity theft and establishing the crime of "aggravated forgery" of underlying documents used to obtain legitimate identity documents.

Very Good News!!!
These kinds of actions are what a majority of people in this country want.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Diann Johansen on 1/10/2008
If we have established laws regarding people entering our country and living here, then the laws should be upheld. It is very important that the illegal immigrant problem be delt with swiftly and upheld by our state and federal government in order to keep civil justice for all citizens. I am all for people of other countries being able to move here and establish residency, but it must be done leagally.

Re: Governor's Immigration Proposals    By Dell Erickson on 1/10/2008
It's good to see Governor Pawlenty enact programs to deal with illegal aliens in Minnesota.

There should be zero illegal aliens in Minnesota and the United States.

However, his plan doesn't go quite far enough. He should have included in his Executive Order, a requirement that all state departments providing benefits or programs to ask immigration status of their clients and require the Minnesota drivers license or current passport as proof of citizenship.

The Governor is doing what the Federal government has turned its back on: enforcement of immigration laws.

Good for the Gov!

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Kathryn on 1/10/2008
I strongly applaud Governor Pawlenty for his courage to DO WHAT IS RIGHT! Illegal immigration is ILLEGAL! It is Un-American to allow these 1000s of illegal aliens to disregard our immigration laws and "use us" as they exploit us by demanding all kinds of benefits. Who do they think they are?

As a nation we have always welcomed immigrants...and we have good laws that must be enforced as they were in years past. What we are doing here in America by allowing this travesty to continue, unabatted, by the millions, is to help bring the demise of this great nation. As we are infiltrated by unchecked illegals who take millions and millions of our tax dollars in a myriad of ways...and who are not required to LEARN ENGLISH and BECOME AMERICAN...we are in the process of losing our America. This is being orchestrated by those in power who do nothing to tighten-up our borders because they are intent on leading the sheep of America into GLOBALISM AND ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT.

Ever heard of NAFTA? The so-called Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement? The NAFTA Super Highway? The Law of the Sea Treaty? Go online and check it out. See how each of these pieces fit together in the jigsaw puzzle called GLOBALISM.

Wake-up to what is happening! Support Pawlenty and find others nationally who have the courage to stand up to the power mongrols and stop this threat to our sovereignty. It is almost too late --- but not yet, while we the citizens still have freedom to act.

The question is, "Will we?"

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Greg McAllister on 1/10/2008
While I applaud the govenor for his actions today (its about time), I have to wonder why he did not go farther.
According to Article V, Section 2 of the Minnesota Constitution:
"He shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed."
What does this mean?
It means that the govenor of the state of Minnesota already has the power and authority to stop the practice of, so called, sanctuary cities. At the very least, sanctuary cites are violating laws regarding harboring felons (illegal immigration is a felony).
I call on Govenor Pawlenty to enforce the law of the land. Mayors Coleman and Rybek, by harboring felons, are violating federal laws.
We do not need additional legislation, we need the govenor to fulfill the duties which he swore an oath to do.

Did he ask McCain for permission first?

Seems that is where he's been spending most of his time lately, and isn't it funny, Feb 5 is fast approaching, trying to give McCain some illegal immigration credentials? Sounds like stolen identity to me.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By kathryn on 1/10/2008
Hi - I just submitted a comment and if it is approved, I would like you to change one word for me please:

in the last paragraph, "power-mongrol elites" should be changed to "power-hungry elites."

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By John Carlson on 1/10/2008
A breath of fresh air from the Governor...finally! However, unless the penalties are strong enough to compel enforcement, our meccas of liberalism will not comply. Mpls, St Paul, Duluth, St Cloud, etc, will thumb their noses and whine about 'rights' when they don't know what RIGHTS really are or don't care. Cut their State funding the first time they fail to comply and watch things change. Also, stealing someone's identity should result in the theif relinquishing everything accumulated, except debt, using that name to the true owner of that identity, whether illegal or not.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Peter Klinkner on 1/10/2008
I believe the steps taken by the Governor today to up hold the laws of this great country were the right thing to do.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Dean Winter on 1/10/2008
THANK YOU... it is about time.. don't give in to pressure to back off of your proposal.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Elizabeth Callender on 1/10/2008
Hooray! But will wait to see if we get the results before having a celebration. In illegally. . . SEND THEM PACKING!

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Jackie on 1/10/2008
About time we do something aggessive about this problem. Thank you!! And all the whiners complaining about it should examine themselves and ask Why am I against this? This is just supporting our laws. If people are against it, they are supporting anarchy and lawlessness! Is that the legacy they want to leave? Again, Thank you Governor for having the courage to enforce our laws.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Jason, young conservative on 1/10/2008
I believe that his stance is refreshing, but lets hold our supposed 'Republican' governor to other conservative stances, such as energy independence using our reserves in Alaska and off our shores. Ethanol isn't going to offset enough, and subsidies to farmers who make millions already is robbing us of our tax dollars. Additionally, he needs to get off of the global warming bandwagon, a new 'religion' in my view. If he and his colleagues manage to push their unproven initaitives through, no one will be able to afford their energy bills, and those that use/need more energy will be viewed as criminals. Gov. Pawlenty, make up your mind who you stand with, real conservatives, or those who have an R in front of their names, but are really just liberals who are afraid to make a stance against the status quo.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Jean on 1/13/2008
It's about time we get tough on this issue and start taking back our country. If these illegal alians want to be here, then follow the proper steps like our parents and grandparents did. If the Federal Government isn't going to build that wall than it is up the States to start taking action.

I am so tired of more money being allocated for social services and health care because of the illegal aliens and those immigrants that refuse to assimilate to being in the US. When can I finally enjoy the life I am trying to make for my family without the hard-earned money I make going to taxes for all these programs???

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Snowden. on 1/13/2008
I applaud the great State of Minnesota's stand against unchecked rampant illegal immigration. Let's hope the Federal Government doesn't step on it as they have in Hazelton, Pa. and other areas of the Country. It's laughable that we spend trillions on a supposed war on terrorism to secure our Nations safety, yet we leave our Southern border wide open to invaders on our own Continent.

A step in the right direction for sure, however we need to press on for more. Enforcement will be key.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By kafka_rose@yahoo.com on 1/13/2008
i think this is a good idea. they are illegal; not the legal immigrants. the legal ones need
not worry. we cannot reward people who break the law! why can't people understand
this simple concept?

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Linda, old conservative on 1/13/2008
Very good conservative stance. Now, give up that support of 'man causes global warming' and I'll back you again. I can hardly wait to listen to Jason Lewis on Monday.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By By Kay on 1/13/2008
I agree with Jason, the young conservative!! It is awesome to see the Pawlenty I've voted for step forward aggressively on the immigration problem we have in Minnesota. I would love to see that same conservative attitude on other issues, as Jason described. No doubt I am not the only Pawlenty supporter who wonders where his head has been lately on some of these issues!

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Jim on 1/14/2008
It is a good first start. I didn't see anything about types of welfare payments made to illegal immigrants. While the Gov. put extra burdens on businesses to verify documents. How about the state and county human services? I would like to know how much documents are being verified there? If there is one thing a liberal gov. bureaucrat likes to do is give government money away.

I agree with Linda, he doesn't have my support until he stops moving forward with his global warming crusade. It's going to cost us all!

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Jim on 1/15/2008
This is a great step forward for Minnesota, it dosent erase the b.s. no smoking ban but as you can tell by the rest of the comments the people of mn do support good ideas

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Bob on 1/15/2008
Now all he has to do is get it pushed through, want to see if this is smoke screen from him or if he really wants to do this. Also, he has to give up on the boondoggle Light Rail and refund the surplus $$$ we all paid in that the Libs will want to put somewhere it doesn't belong!! It belongs in our pockets!!!

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Mike -Crow Wing county on 1/21/2008
This is the direction the country needs to go. We are sick of hearing about "rights" for illegal immigrants. They are illegal - they have not earned any rights in the USA for benefits or protection. Also, now please abolish the Ventura bill that has ruined state funding for schools (our future). Even if we could split up the $186 million/yr used for illegal immigrant education that would help. We need to also LEAN out the gov't and start runnning it like a business instead of a bottomless pit of money. Our country's future depends on it.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Paul Hoffer on 1/21/2008
Thank you Gov.Pawlenty and also my local Sen. Joe Gimse for being willing to take on the tough issue of illegal immigration

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Susan of Willmar on 1/21/2008
Let the majority rule!! I didn't think I was prejudiced, but when I see what has happened to my home town (thanks to JennieO) I cry. They are breaking us financially , many do not speak OUR language, they are constantly in our courts. They are NOT the immigrants our forefathers were.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Gary on 1/21/2008
Its time to close all the loop-holes and send the illegals home. We have enough of a hard time supporting the systems put in place for people who need it.
Let's see this one go through.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By william keefe on 1/23/2008
why are mn drivers llicenses given to people that don't meet what should be the minimum requirments?

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Bonnie of Ogilvie on 1/25/2008
We the people who are not illegal immigrants are struggling as middle income workers. WE need a break. The low income need a break. The illegal immigrants don't need a break. We can't possibly support every immigrant in the world that wants to come here. We need tax breaks. We need college education breaks. We need housing breaks. There's not enough to go around and we're tired of working and muddling through life supporting those people. THANK YOU GOVERNOR PAWLENTY.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Tohono 'Odham in Minnesota on 1/25/2008
My direct ancestors are American Indians that lived in what is now the US for 13 THOUSAND years and eventually intermarried with Spanish settlers that came in about 500 years ago. I find it sickening that newcomers whose families came a mere 100 years or so ago now think that those of us who have a different language and culture are not true Americans. I do not need to speak English, assimilate to your boring culture or listen to your dumb country music to be considered American. I am American, with my own culture, my own language and own traditions. You keep yours, and I’ll keep mine, and everything will be just fine.

As far as the so-called illegal aliens, NONE of the Norwegians or Germans or Swedes that came in the last century had any papers either...that's right, quotas and visas for immigrants only came into effect after 1924. Before that time, any European could just walk in and be admitted into the US.

I say that if open borders worked for Ollie and Lena, same should be true for Jose and Pedro...to say otherwise is plain and simply racist!

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Servetus on 1/25/2008
Virtually everyone who immigrated legally to this country assimilated into our culture by respecting the law, speaking the language and contributing to society. No one said anyone had to forsake their precious ethnic traditions. Many families still speak their native languages and are free to practice their customs.

Our current laws are not being obeyed or in many cases enforced. With all due respect to your ancestors, where do you stand on the concept of the rule of law?

Gov. Pawlenty's moves to abuse the undocument workers needed for our Businesses.    By Nick Gould on 1/27/2008
I find Mary Kiffmeyer's commericals against the hard working undocumented workers completely disgusting.

Gov. Pawlenty's move to abuse undocumented workers in this state, and at the same time his move to abuse Minnesota State city governments,by forcing them to take part in an obvious bankrupt immigration policy is as Draconian as it gets. Gov. Pawlenty might as well place the Nazi Swastika above the capitials flag.

Also, I see that the MinnesotaMajority.gov petition allows for only petitioning against undocumented workers. It looks like MinnesotaMajority does not want to hear what the majority has to say.

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By gene f. roth on 1/27/2008
It is about time that we as citizens take charge of our state and nation. We are a nation of laws. People who dont follow these laws must not be rewarded for breaking them. THIS IS NOT RACIAL BUT UNIVERSAL BELIEF THAT LAW KEEPS US TOGETHER AS A NATION. GENE F ROTH

Re: Governor Unveils Sweeping Immigration Proposals    By Barb on 2/1/2008
Why would anyone want to petition for illegal, undocumented workers unless they are profitting from them? Or they feel sorry for them, Nick? You think your better then the people of Mexico? That makes you racist. I am not for undocumented workers when it takes away money and increases costs to my children and my children are left with less then they would be had this not be a simple shoice to do what is right. I believe God gave man strength! Illegal immigrants would rather risk their's and their children's lives to cross another countries border, take advantage of any & all taxpaid resources, deliberately causing problems to good hearted people, including preying on the sympathies of others, instead of using their strength to stand up to the government they are running from. This is not racial. it has to do with laws that are being violated by people who refuse to follow them. the laws of America are civil laws that every human being is able to abide by, your race your color of skin your eyes have NOTHING to do with your ignorance to law/civil law. Every man is created equal and civil law is created for every man EQUALLY. Ignorance is a behavioral problem, as no man is ever able to control another man's behavior. That is right, this is NOT RACIAL.

Did you know that estrogen from birth control and "morning after" pills is causing male fish across America to develop female sex organs? Funny how "pro-choice" and "environmentalist" liberals never talk about that. Or how about this: the Live Earth concert to "save the planet" released more CO2 into the atmosphere than a fleet of 2,000 Humvees emit in a year? We hear a lot about AIDS in Africa, but the number one killer of children in much of Africa is malaria--and guess who was responsible for banning the pesticide that used to have malaria under control? Iain Murray, a sprightly environmental analyst with a long record of skewering liberal hypocrisy, has dug up seven of the all-time great environmental catastrophes caused by the Left and exposed them in The Really Inconvenient Truths.
