Representative Michele Bachmann (R–MN–6) called for a march on Washington DC today, terming it a “House Call” on the health care bill. Early estimates put the crowd in DC at 50,000 people protesting against the proposed government takeover of health care in the United States. Not everyone could drop everything on short notice and take a bus to the nation’s Capitol, though so Minnesota Majority organized a Youth Rally against the health care bill at the state Capitol. The event drew a couple hundred people of all ages to the Capitol steps at noon today.

Some parents took their children out of school to attend the event for what they were calling a “real-life civics lesson.” Children, teens and adults showed up carrying home made signs with messages like, “If Obamacare is so great, why is Congress exempt,” “Give me liberty or give me death panels,” and “Choose the Public Option (OR ELSE!),” among other creative expressions opposing the takeover plan.

Talk show host Sue Jeffers emceed the rally that included a recorded message from Rep. Bachmann, speakers Jeff Peil, Jeff Davis, Tom Prichard, Rose Barrett and 13-year-old Hannah Quinn. Quinn first provided her perspective on the universal sanctity of human life and posited that a law that doesn’t respect life - from the unborn to the elderly, without regard for ability - is doomed to fail. She also delivered a message from her state representative, Peggy Scott (R-49A) to the crowd.

A chant of “kill the bill” came up repeatedly during the one-hour rally and it was wrapped up with the crowd singing along to My Country ‘tis of Thee.

“This was a nationwide phenomenon,” said Davis. “While we were at this rally at the state Capitol, other people were bussing to DC and others were visiting their representatives’ local offices. People are taking action. It’s really encouraging,” he said.

Take Action: The health care bill could come to a vote in the House as soon as Friday or Saturday. Call your representative now.

This is very encouraging! It's Saturday, and I get nervous every time the news comes on.The first clue of obvious corruption is heath care reform worded in 2000 pages. Health care reform is not health care take-over. Proper reform wouldn't consist of 2000 pages or a dime from the taxpayer. This is deceiving, underhanded and undeserving of the American people.

We are EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR ALL ABLE TO ATTEND THE RALLIES. AND A SPECIAL THANKS TO MINNESOTA MAJORITY AND MICHELLE BACHMANN!

The House Bill passed. So now what are you thinking? Do you believe the Senate will fail and doom this entire process?

Do you think that Newt and Perry of Texas have it correct? That Texas should be the nations example - even though it leads the nation with over 24% uninsured?

Do you think that even $2 trillion (over ten years) is too much to pay for 35+ million Americans to be insured? Do you think that there is any way for any of those losing their insurance through unemployment to actually buy it through COBRA or other private options? Those stripped down options with little of no hope for anyone with a chronic illness. Did you know there are 90 million Americans with some form of chronic illness?

Why is Cheney's logic toward non-military spending your view? The Cheney doctrine is never to cut miitary spending in order to fund any domestic need. Why is that correct? We don't spend enough on our military? We can't maintain our freedom without it? Is that really true? Can it be proven? Not glibbly, but through scientific process. Meaning the proof can be repeated, and verified by an independent, non-partisan review of qualified scholars.

Now, another question. Is this site set up because it has become a franchise for Conservatives to sell their wares and indirectly their ideology?

Rick , a couple of questions for you - What are your thoughts on how our social security has been managed ? how about medicare ? How about the 780 billion bailout ? how about gerrymandering (redistricting)? pay disparity and pension disparity between the private and the public sectors? Medicare part A and B have an unfunded liability of 68 trillion , since 2006 when the prescription drug benifit kicked in (part D) only 3 years - the unfunded liability - an additional 17.2 trillion.

Rick - I'm the first to agree that Health care needs a major overhaul !! - But are these the right group people to work on that overhaul - look at their track record !

Re: Near and Far, Young and Old Rally Against Federal Takeover of Health Care    By Barb on 11/12/2009
Rick, insurance has always been a choice. My father advised me to get a job where they offer benefits. One, being health insurance. And in offering, means a choice to have or have not. Many people chose to have not and hence created a convenient crisis that really is nothing more then people choosing NOT TO HAVE INSURANCE and the government including illegal immigrants. Why do you think so little of people not to do for themselves? People become accustom to personal responsibilities and civil responsibilities, through discipline of self, law, rights, liberties with civil unity under civil law, equal to all mankind. There is no reason why all citizens of this country couldn't have respected and taken on what is expected of all under the Declaration of Independence. The government enables dependency and doesn't expect it of all, resulting in a great burden to others.

Re: Near and Far, Young and Old Rally Against Federal Takeover of Health Care    By Steve Hansmann on 11/19/2009
Remember, republicans have had the majority control and influence on government since 1969, and total control for six years at the beginning of this century and did....nothing. Nothing on immigration, nothing to ban abortion, nothing to fix health care, or social security, or medicare or anything else. And please don't forget, Saint Ronnie was the first president to raid Social Security to provide smoke and mirrors coverage for his military spending and corporate prostitution. At least take some credit, "conservatives", for the dung-heap we now find ourselves in.

Re: Near and Far, Young and Old Rally Against Federal Takeover of Health Care    By Barb on 11/30/2009
Read the American Constitution, Steve. Everything but immigration is the responsibilities of a free people The reason why immigration is out of control is because members of the government grew bleeding hearts and accommodated to appeasement all of what immigrants don't work or budget for, but want and get at the cost of the tax payers. The conflict of interest is government expecting less of immigrants, to have the ability to live independently, without GOVERNMENT.. And if illegals were to have assimilated, who would've known their existence? No one. This is all by design. Government take-over design.

To make this a republican/democrate issue is to loose sight of the problem here. Both parties represent more of the same, bigger governments, more spending, larger deficits, which lead to more trouble with our economy here and globally Whats at stake here is liberty and freedom. Government has a bad track record of managing anything, if they pass cap and trade or healthcare reform that puts them in control of far to much of our private lives and decisions. The sad truth is when you realize it - it will be to late. If this healthcare is so important - why would they try to rush it throught so quickly ? Something this complex should be studied, presented to the 350 million people that it will impact for public debate, and then studied again. What would be wrong with implementing in one or two areas or states that agreed with it for a trial ???

Why do Republicans repeat this ridiculous mantra that people CHOOSE not to be insured? Here's the reality: people who have been laid off need jobs, and more and more employers are not offering benefits with the jobs they have available. How many people do you know with dental coverage, for instance? It's not MY choice that my employer does not offer family coverage anymore. For some people out there the only choice is a job with no benefits or no job. Hmmm...what would you "choose?'

I know it's probably easier to sleep at night if you pretend that people who aren't fabulously wealthy don't deserve health care, but guess what? No one chooses to get sick. And I would bet a zillion dollars that if a member of your family were to have a life-threatening illness--one that would wipe you out financially--you would be very willing to have the government step in and help you get the very best care available, without having to spend the rest of your life in debtor's prison. Look at the big picture. WWJD?

First of all, Minnesota Majority isn't a Republican organization. It's non-partisan. We fight bad ideas whatever side of the aisle they originate on. Second, why assume that since we don't like the massive socailist goernment takeover of health care that we don't want to fix the problems? Problems that were created by government, by the way. Time for a refesher on our position: http://www.minnesotamajority.org/TheIssues/HealthCare/tabid/121/Default.aspx

Re: Near and Far, Young and Old Rally Against Federal Takeover of Health Care    By Barb on 12/11/2009
Hey Kim, I don't mind being called "conservative," but I'm not Republican. I am not wealthy, but I fight for the freedom to obtain the opportunity. I don't like government in the business of what people can do for themselves. And because many people lack the will to do for themselves is causing a crisis on the rest of us that want to live free and independently from government.
Good one, Norton.

Re: Near and Far, Young and Old Rally Against Federal Takeover of Health Care    By Barb on 12/11/2009
Oh, and WWJD? He would influence people to do for themselves...probably why it isn't being done.

Keep in mind also, Jesus is a man who preached nor taught words of any religion. He is the greatest man ever, on this earth. A great role model to all humanity, eh?

Ah. I made the mistake of reading your articles and looking at the ads on the sidebars to reach that conclusion. Your word choice ("massive socialist government takeover") definitely screams nonpartisanism. Thanks for giving the issue a fair shake, and thanks for setting me straight.
