Nine states have passed laws allowing illegal immigrants to attend colleges and universities for the same cost as a legal in-state resident. Are American students being unfairly biased by this arguably "illegal" competition for a coveted slot in class?
California, Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Washington currently offer illegal immigrants in-state tuition rates. American citizens that attend school outside of the state of their primary residence are, in many cases, required to pay almost twice as much tuition as illegal immigrants.
Under U.S. law, illegal immigrants may not hold any job in the United States. That raises the question as to why we would offer educational advantages to the very people we prohibit from having a legitimate job in our country. Students without legal immigrant status continue to be ineligible for federal financial aid, although states are required to provide K-12 public education as a result of a 1982 Supreme Court decision.
The Wall Street Journal raised the possibility that the whole in-state tuition benefit for illegal aliens issue has been nothing more than a vote buying ploy for politicians appealing to hispanic illegals:
"Promoters expect few students to actually take up the benefit. Dropout rates are high and academic scores generally are low among Hispanics, who account for the majority of illegal aliens. "
In-state tuition for illegal aliens is a violation of Federal Law. Federal Law Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623 states:
"an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State... for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit."
In-state tuition for illegals is in fact a form of amnesty masquerading as an incentive for education.

| Many times I've heard what would Jesus Do? Jesus would direct people to stand for their rights in their country of origin. Jesus does not condone infringement to others, including others of another country. Jesus also stands for the laws of man that build human qualities of endurance, integrity, dignity. The government is appeasing the sin of illegals. Those who are illegal but claim to be God's people can repent, go back to their country of origin and stand up: to and for their human rights of their own government, build and attend their own colleges. Or get legal and pay their own way. Obviously the government does not want people to build their endurance integrity and dignity and is taking it away from the people that have these qualities already. Government is weakening humanity day by day. And churches that appease those who are illegal aren't doing God's will either. |

| Not only this, but PELL grants are available to non-citizens, paying tuition, supplies, and even housing. Many of the grant recipients, who get free education at tax payer expense, then return to their own countries without the USA benefiting from the education provided them. And no repayment required. Sweet deal. |

| I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE GOVERNMENT IS SO BIAS FOR IMMIGRANTS. AND TO TOP IT OFF ILLEGAL. THIS IS SO WRONG. THE CONSTITUTION IS FOR ALL HUMAN LIFE EQUALLY. ALTHOUGH IT SEEMS THE GOVERNMENT DOESN'T THINK ANYONE SHOULD APPRECIATE IT, OR CAN LIVE UP TO IT, UNLESS THEY ARE AMERICAN BORN...why... theodore roosevelt is so bummed out |

I think our forefathers would turn over in their graves in watching our government degrade all they fought for by giving "ILLEGAL" immigrants free money, schooling, etc. so they can go back and trash the U.S.A. anyway. Illegal means illegal. I don't undstand why people and especially our government don't understand that. They should have absolutely no rights. We should be helping AMERICANS with education, etc. In my opinion, we are giving away the country by spending all this money on dual signage, dual teachers, etc. Spanish and English. If you want to live here, become an American and state your loyalty to America. You can't be loyal to two countries.
Amen. |

| If you're not here through the legal process you have no right to expect the same treatment as citizens. No free healthcare, cheaper tuition, housing, etc. Pay your way like everyone else or go without or go home. |

| Illegal immigration is the greatest problem facing our nation. There is no end to this problem unless citizens take action by notifying their elected officals of their concerns. If we dont stop this invasion our nation as we know it will be no more.We are a nation of laws and when these laws are not enforced total chaos occures. We must not reward law breakers ,because tis encourages more of the same. |

What part of illegal don't you understand. Why can't we all go out and break the law as that is just as illegal. Send all the illegals back home. We don;t treat our own citzens as good as the illegals, this is very, very wrong. |

What other country grants illegals all the benefits that the legal citizens have? If you're here illegally, and are not i the process of becomeing legal, then you do not have and s/not have any rights. You have done nothing to earn them. |
