An estimated 8,000 - 10,000 people turned out to protest out of control federal spending at the State Capitol today. The St. Paul Tax Day Tea Party was organized by local activists, but was part of a national movement that included similar rallies in over 600 cities around the country. High taxes, bailouts and rocketing national debt were the common themes bringing people together for the energetic protest.
Attendees were treated to an electric guitar solo rendition of the Star Spangled banner and protest activities like adding to and signing a scroll of grievances and filling out post cards to be sent to members of Congress. There was also a tea dumping ceremony where attendees threw tea bags into a large crate, harkening back to the 1773 Boston Tea Party tax protest that lent this event its name.
KTLK's Sue Jeffers emceed the event, firing up the crowd and introducing speakers like Chris Baker, Pat Anderson, Bill Jungbauer and Phil Krinkie.
More Tea Parties are planned in the near future. Expect one in St. Paul on Independence Day.
Next up: The Tax Cut Coalition's Tax Cut Rally hosted by Jason Lewis at the Capitol on May 2nd.

The "liberal" spin on this day from CNN to Nancy Pelosi is disgusting and appalling. It was a strong message to Congress - that's for sure! And Fox News had "nothing" to do with organizing this thing!

I am PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, TO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH(I WAS IN THE CROWD). WORKED FOR MANY YEARS AND DO NOT APPRECIATE ALL THE GOVERNMENT SPENDING OR TAXES. I PLAN TO ATTEND MAY 2 AND AM SPREADING THE WORD TO OTHERS TO ATTEND. THOSE IN GOVERNMENT NEED TO REMEMBER WHO PUT THEM THERE AND THEY SHOULD BE REPRESENTING THOSE PEOPLE, NOT THEIR OWN AGENDA.

I am so proud of Americans protesting this out of control spending this government is doing to our future generations. I think Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Franke & maybe even Obama need to hit the road! They are so out of touch with the American hard working taxpayer, they cannot even relate. I hope we can unite more in the future & get someone in Republican or Independent that can step up & lead this party to victory & get less government back & stop this spending of money we don't have. Minnesotas liberals have brought in every refugee they can & with the illegals here & nothing done about it, they are literally draining our social programs. Now we have comprehensive immigration of Amnesty on the table to vote for this fall. This makes me sick! We have over 12 or million Americans out of work, but we still import in H1-B visas of legal immigrants & families of 140,000 each month to take American jobs. When does this madness stop? Unemployed Americans should be outraged at this. Lakeville has an industrial park, I have seen the gray bus come in say "Just in Case" on the bus full of immigrants taking manufacturing jobs Americans can do & aren't aware this is going on. This is another big issue facing Minnesotas budget & not being addressed. I am proud my District 36 all three voted no on the spending bill, not to many voted no. Maybe they got the message. Keep up the great work. Doreen Machin, Lakeville, MN.

I was out of town on business and could not attend our local tea party in Duluth. By the sounds of it, the event was a great success and it makes me think we are at the tipping point. Folks are waking up! Remember, the stimulous package isn't about money, it's about power. For the government to gain power, you must lose some. Money is just an efficient tool to accomplish a manevolent goal.

I was unable to attend the tea party but I was there in spirit. I want to send a note of appreciation for all those who organized the party and also attended. I was very inspirired by the tea parties and hope that it will make a difference. Obama announced today that he wanted the budget cut by 100M. He heard us. We need to keep up the fight! Thank you everyone! Keep up the good work.
