Do you believe that the United States is a nation of laws governed by the Constitution? Do you support states’ rights? Oppose abortion?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Department of Homeland Security might be keeping an eye on you as a potential “right-wing extremist” or “white supremacist” domestic terrorist.
A report titled “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” was published for internal use by the Department of Homeland Security on April 7th. It cautions that though they have no specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence, “rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues.”
The 9-page document is eerily reminiscent of another recent law enforcement report produced by Missouri’s state highway patrol, "The Modern Militia Movement," that suggested supporters of third-party political candidates (singling out Ron Paul and Bob Barr as examples) should be scrutinized as potential militia-influenced terrorists.
The document contains a notice stating that no portion of the “Law Enforcement Sensitive” information contained therein should be released to the media, the general public, or over non-secure Internet servers. “Release of this information could adversely affect or jeopardize investigative activities,” the warning concludes. Despite that admonition, it didn't take long for the document to leak to the public.
Political opposition to some of President Obama’s desired policy changes, and the new energy of conservative political activism and organization are now perceived as a potential violent threat, the report would indicate. For example, the report seems to suggest that opposition to illegal immigration equates to white supremacy and is symptomatic of “right-wing radicalization.”
“The historical election of an African American president and the prospect of policy changes are proving to be a driving force for rightwing extremist recruitment and radicalization,” it reads. The rise of the national “Tea Party” protest movement may be considered a part of this radicalization and recruitment. Joining policy-focused organizations like Minnesota Majority, the NRA or the Taxpayers League could also be construed in this way.
The nebulous and unsubstantiated language used in parts of the report are cause for concern. It says, “most statements by right-wing extremists have been rhetorical - stopping short” of calls for violent action. The use of language in this way suggests that whatever unmentioned organizations they refer to were on the path toward calls for violence but for whatever reason pulled back from the brink at the last second. It goes on to mention that “[in] two instances in the run-up to the election, extremists appeared to be in the early planning stages of some threatening activity targeting the Democratic nominee,” without citing the cases, what law enforcement action was taken, who the alleged extremists were or what form the “threatening activity” would have taken. Throughout, the report refers to groups that speak out on issues that concern them as having the potential "to turn violent,” or “to incite violence” while providing no evidence to support such a vague and unexplained prediction.
Even though the federal government has instructed citizens to stock up on food and water and other supplies in case of an emergency, the DHS report links stockpiling food with anti-government conspiracy theorists, “end-times” prophecies and “the radicalization of domestic extremist individuals.”
The recent upswing in gun and ammunition sales also causes concern for the report’s authors, who refer to gun and ammunition stockpiling as militia activity.
Ordinary political operations by conservative groups and political parties, like recruitment or arguing an opposing point of view are singled out as radical extremist activity, evidently if they come from a point of view of “political prejudices” or opposition to President Obama’s agenda. The term “political prejudices” is a new one that merits some contemplation, as it’s used in the following paragraph from the DHS report.
“Many rightwing extremists are antagonistic toward the new presidential administration and its perceived stance on a range of issues, including immigration and citizenship, the expansion of social programs to minorities, and restrictions on firearms ownership and use. Rightwing extremists are increasingly galvanized by these concerns and leverage them as drivers for recruitment. From the 2008 election timeframe to the present, rightwing extremists have capitalized on related racial and political prejudices in expanded propaganda campaigns, thereby reaching out to a wider audience of potential sympathizers.”
At more than one point in the report, opposition to illegal immigration is linked to racism, xenophobia or white supremacy. It is a document clearly written by people with a strong ideological bent of their own and unfortunately, this report was crafted by employees of the federal government, on government time for official government purposes and was bought and paid for by us, the US taxpayers. Officials responsible for our national security produced this grossly misguided and politically charged document. Such a government document could not have seen the light of day without supervisory and editorial review, so it can not be said that the document was simply the product of one poor misguided soul at DHS. At a minimum, several individuals who work closely together in the department are jointly responsible. The DHS employees who produced, edited, fact-checked and authorized this irresponsible and downright frightening official and confidential document appear to be the actual radicals and perhaps their employment status should come under scrutiny.
Take Action: Get involved and keep growing the movement. Attend the Tax Day Tea Party on Wednesday April 15th.
Attend the annual Tax Cut Rally at the Capitol on Saturday, May 2nd.
CORRECTION: This article originally reported that the DHS report had been retracted. That was incorrect. DHS stands behind and continues to consider this report official policy. |

Clarification on quiz question #1, Do you believe that the United States is a nation of laws governed by the Constitution?
"Is" or "should be?" I guess that depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is. |

This is stupid, it's as if our on goverment wants to provoke violence. Don't start calling people radicals or they may become radicals.
It's a racist towards whites to even mention white supremacy, that has nothing to do with how a person feels about illegal immigration. So, if you are a African American that doesn't agree with illegal immigration from Mexico does that make you racist or do you get off the hook because you have some color in your skin? All American's at some point migrated here from another country. Back in the old days they stood in long lines and even had to change their last name. All that we are asking is that people don't abuse or cheat the system and do things ligitimately. I am not racist at all. I do think that we need immigration reform, but I don't think that we can just start deporting every illegal immigrant, some of them have worked hard to establish themselves here and do contribute to society. I am sick and tired of RACISM towards whites. It goes both ways so they need to stop pointing the finger at just whites who are racist and take a step back. Is it ok for a mexican to be racist towards and Asian? |

| According to DHS I am a Terrorist. If being a peaceful Patriot that loves his country as the founding fathers intended it to be and as the Constitution clearly states it should be, that loves and believes in God and that our great nation was founded on religous principles, that loves his family and will do whatever needs be done to protect them and that believes the Obama Admin is taking our country the wrong direction then I will proudly accept the label of "terrorist". However, don't you ever confuse this "Patriot Terrorist" with the real terrorists around the world. Just because I do not agree with Obama or Napalitano now makes me a terrorist? WOW! We can;t call "real" terrorists, terrorists yet my government will call me one for speaking my mind in a peacful manner. Where the hell are we headed? |

Unfortunately the stupidity of the American electorate has us headed straight for the toilet. It didn't take a genius to see where this Administration was going to take us. Become accustomed to phrases such as "New World Order". Hopefully Americans will wake up before it's to late and it already may be.

| I spent 7 years in the armed service of this country, fighting the real terrorists to keep them off our soil and this is how this administration rewards me? By putting the same label on us as is on the people sawing off the heads of our POW's! I love my country and have done all in my power to keep her people safe, yet we are called radicals because we don't follow the views of the far left. I'll gladly bear the name in that case, for I can think of a few other people that would probably have been called radicals and terrorists in their day when they stood for what they believed and built this great country of ours! |

| This is plain stupid! The questions are loaded. If you answer it one way your a terrorist and if I answer another way then my answer is wrong. I love my country. However, I believe that we have to get back to the basic roots of when the constitution was signed and what it stood for. We are getting out of control and the elected officials are not helping us. |

| Read the report, it's obvious no one on this blog has. The report, which was authorized by the Bush administration by the way, is very precise in the definitions it uses. And there is no doubt that white supremacist groups have deliberately infiltrated the U.S. military to gain expertise in weapons and explosives, AND to try to recruit soldiers to their various and sundry pseudo-militia, faux-patriot groups. The Southern Poverty Law Center has meticulously documented this infiltration. And the nurse who had a good part of her face torn away and was blinded by one of Eric Rudolph's bombs would certainly consider him a terrorist, (and she wasn't even involved in providing any nursing-related care involving abortions). The fact that he was hidden by hundreds of people for over five years shows that right-wing extremism is alive and well. And by the way, literally every single death that can be attributed to terrorism in this country other than 9-11 since 1974 is right-wing, period. |

| Steve's comments here are utter nonsense. There certainly has been an alarming level of domestic terrorism inside the US, but it's been perpetrated primarily by the left. It's usually reported as "protests" but torching whole lots of new cars, destroying laborotories, making pipe bombs, destroying busses and attempting acts of violence against peaceful Republican convention attendees go a bit beyond "protest," wouldn't you say? On the extremely rare occasion that conservatives gather to protest, like the tea parties and upcoming Tax Cut Rally, these gatherings are peaceful, orderly and the protestors clean up after them selves. |

Mr. McGrath, I'll assume you are honest. But for you not to know the role that reactionary, conservative, and religious, both Christian and Muslim, the actual toll in human lives, is incomprehensible to me. Timothy McVeigh, Ruby Ridge, abortion clinic bombings, and extensive, amounting to many millions of dollars, damage to health clinics even suspected of providing abortions, the execution of seven protestors in North Carolina by "good old Southern boys", the Posse Comitatus and Christian Identity movement, not to mention the other fringe "militia" movements that are violent, the polygamist Mormon sects in Utah that used dynamite, among other things, to destroy rival polygamists, and in one case, were involved in an armed stand-off with the FBI/ATF, not to mention all of the Aryan/Klan etc. murders committed during multiple armored car and bank robberies and more recently, murdering their own members, (which actually isn't such a loss). I'm only scratching the surface here; throw in the murders of homosexuals, which usually is both right-wing and religious, and you have multiple hundreds of lives slaughtered, hundreds more maimed, lives ruined and impacted forever. And at the Republican convention the only folks hurt were protestors. And please don't say all of the monstrosities I mentioned earlier are not republicans, or at least driven and informed by conservative ideology. You don't get to cherry-pick believers. Liberals have our 1960's terrorists and PETA, you guys have your psychos. Honest appraisal here would be appreciated. |

Dan, It doesn't surprise me you didn't post my last entry. In it I made utter nonsense of your assertion that the left is primarily responsible for domestic terrorism. There have been hundreds of people killed by right-wing extremists since 1980. The left's terrorists ended their actions almost fifty years ago. It's just like you, and everyone else on the right, to assign everything possible to the left, the pipe bomb makers you mention which were primarily mentally ill kids, and take responsibility for nothing conservatives inspire, pathetic. Remember G. Gordon Liddy's admonition on his radio show after Waco, "When federal agents coming knocking, aim for their heads as they always wear body armor.' Limbaugh was similarly attacking the government. A year later that life-long republican, former soldier, blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City. But of course the "violence" at the republican convention and burning up suv's is much worse than children torn into pieces. And you wonder why you guys are done. I don't think you're a liar; but your are a goddamn fool. Steve Hansmann |
